On July 4“Community and the Country: Study on Freedom of Conscious in Armenia” book presentation and the press conference took place at the “Media Center”. Journalist Vahan Ishkahnyan, author and the editor of the book, co-authors Meri Yeraqnsoyan, Sociologist, and Sara Khojoyan, Journalist, introduced the aim and the outcomes of the project implemented by Helsinki Committee of Armenia.
“Community and the Country: Study on Freedom of Conscious in Armenia” book discusses the legislative obstacles to the freedom of conscious in Armenia, the relations between religious organizations, the intolerant religious attitudes of state authorities and the public at large. Stories of religious people who experienced difficulties and discrimination because of their confessional choice are described. The study also summarizes the research conducted in the field of religious freedom in the last 5 years.
Talking about the book Vahan Ishkhanyan presented the challenges that representatives of various religious groups faced emphasizing that the project focused on the problems of the mentioned groups of people. “An article is dedicated to the Law on the Freedom of Conscious”, – mentioned Ishkhanyan.
“The term “proselytizing” should not be used in the Law, whereas it is used. However, RA Ministry of Justice ensures that the term will not be included in the new draft of the Law”,- he said referring to the legislative proposals.
Sara Khojoyan, Journalist, reflected on the question about Armenian Apostolic Church and stressed: “We tried not to separate Armenian Apostolic Church from other churches and we did our best to present it in our articles as well”.
